Abraham Lincoln Short Biography: Abraham Lincoln was an American lawyer, politician, and statesman who served as the 16th president of the United States from 1861 to 1865.

Abraham Lincoln is generally considered the greatest president in the history of U.S.A. His hard work, irreproachable character and determination, he rose to become the President of U.S.A.

Two historical achievements of Lincoln as President, which also made him so great, were the abolition of the abominable system of slavery and preservation of the unity and integrity of his country.

Abraham Lincoln came to the office of the President of U.S.A. at a very critical time, when the whole of the country was bitterly divided over the question of abolition of slavery.

The southern states of America, that were predominantly agricultural, wanted to retain slavery as they considered it necessary for their economy.

While the northern states, with an industrial economy, were in support of the abolition of slavery, the southern states had also formed a separate Confederation’ and provoked the northern states to engage into an armed conflict.

Ultimately Lincoln decided that war had become necessary for keeping the country united and the abolition of slavery. So. America was engulfed into a Civil War that lasted for about four years, and in the end the southern states were decisively defeated.

Lincoln was born on 12th February 1809, into a poor family of Kentucky (U.S.A.). His father’s name was Thomas Lincoln. Lincoln’s early life was full of hardships.

He was a bright student but could not study much for lack of means. Lincoln became a store clerk and later qualified himself to be a lawyer, and also started legal practice.

In 1847, he was elected for the American Congress and in 1861, he was elected President of U.S.A. as a candidate of the Republican Party. In 1863, Abraham Lincoln abolished slavery throughout the United States.

It was a Good Friday, April 14, 1865, when Lincoln was assassinated by an insane actor John Wilkes Booth when Lincoln and his wife were watching a theatrical performance in Washington. He died the next day at 7:22 am.
