Short Biography of Ratan Tata: Ratan Naval Tata [28 December 1937 – 9 October 2024] was an esteemed Indian industrialist and philanthropist. He is one of the most prominent builders of the Tata Group empire in India. He served as the chairman of Tata Group and Tata Sons from 1991 to 2012, and later as interim chairman from October 2016 to February 2017.

Ratan Tata was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital, Mumbai in critical condition on 7 October 2024 and was under intensive care. He passed away there on the night of 9 October 2024, at the age of 86.

December 28, 1937: Born in Mumbai to Naval Tata and Suni Tata.

1955: Begins schooling at Cathedral and John Cannon School, Mumbai and completes at Bishop Cotton, Shimla.

1962: Graduated from Cornell University, New York with a degree in architecture.

1962: Joined the Tata Group as an assistant at Tata Industries. Trained for six months at Tata Engineering and
Locomotive Company (Tata Motors) Jamshedpur plant.

1969: Served as representative of Tata Group in Australia.

1970: Tata Computer Systems (TCS) was launched in 1968. He returned to India in 1970.

1971: Appointed Director of National Radio and Electronics (Nelco).

1974: Joined Tata Sons Group as a Director.

1975: Completed Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School.

1981: Appointed Chairman of Tata Industries. After two years, Tata drew up a strategic plan. The institute is
designed to promote high-tech initiatives.

1986-1989: Served as Chairman of national airline Air India

March 25, 1991: Takes over as chairman of Tata Sons and Tata Trusts.

2000: Enters new industry by acquiring British brand Tetley (Tea).

2000: Received Padma Bhushan, India’s third highest civilian award

2005: Tata Chemicals acquired British company Brunner Mond.

2007: Acquired European steel giant Corus.

2008: Acquired Jaguar Land Rover.

2008: Tata Nano, India’s most affordable car, is launched.

2008: Awarded Padma Vibhushan, the country’s second highest civilian award.

December 2012: Stepped down as chairman of Tata Sons after nearly 50 years in the Tata group. Subsequently, he
was appointed Chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons.

2013: Supreme Court takes up the Neera Radia wiretapping case. At that time, he argued that people’s right to
privacy should be protected.

2017: Served as Interim Chairman of Tata Group.

Since 2017: Worked with the policy of always investing in startups.

2021: The Supreme Court ruled in favor of Ratan Tata and Tata Sons in the Neera Radia wiretapping case.

2024: He passed away on 9 October 2024, at the age of 86.
