Nagara Panchami Date | History | Significance: Shravanamasa, the month of festivals, brings a cascade of celebrations in Hindu tradition. Among the various festivities dedicated to different deities, the worship of Shiva and Vishnu takes center stage. Nagar Panchami falls on the fifth day of the bright half (Shukla Paksha) of the Shravana month. This year, it will be celebrated on Monday, August 21. Devotees mark this occasion by paying homage to Lord Naga, the serpent deity. It’s believed that honoring Nagadev on this day bestows blessings from Lord Shiva and helps to rid oneself of various afflictions. Milk is often poured over snake figurines or images as an offering.

Nagara Panchami festival is also known as ‘Garuda Panchami’. This is because it strengthens the brotherhood between brother and sister. Due to some reason, the brother and sister have a grudge between them and despite being far away, they meet each other today.

Its beginning is the new moon of Bhima. On that day a snack called bhandara is made. Sisters keep it on both sides of the front door. The brothers gently touch it in some places with their elbows and in others with their fists. It should not be eaten by anyone other than brothers. Because of this, a sisterly helper is available during times of hardship. Aid and cooperation is not just money. Sisters’ blessings have more power. Then comes Naga Chauthi. Naga Chauthi falls on 20th of this month.

A wonderful story about Nagar Panchami

Nagara Panchami or Garuda Panchami comes on the next day i.e. Monday 21st. There is a wonderful story about Nagar Panchami. Once upon a time there was a poor man. He has a daughter named Akmanji. She used to observe this Nagar Panchami Vrat with fear and devotion at an early age. Once dressed for the puja, she calls her brothers and asks them to bring fruits and flowers for the puja.

To fulfill his sister’s promise, the brother goes out to fetch the kedige flower. But bad luck awaits there. The cobra hiding there bites the brother’s hand. In a moment, the poison permeates the whole body and he falls on the ground.

Akmanje, who came to know about this incident from some people, worships her idol Nagappa and asks him to save his brothers. She takes soaked rice, groundnut, banana, chigali, tambittu, coconut, rice kernels, chickpeas and tamarind as offering to God and arrives at the place where the brothers sacrificed their lives. There she worships Nagappa, made of clay, through shodashopachara puja. After that, she brings unborn soil, flower buds, self-poured milk, ghee, and akshata and sprinkles them on the brothers.

Surprisingly, immediately those brothers get up as if nothing happened. Why are we so sleepy about everyone? will ask. Then Akmanji happily tells about Nagappa that Hari becomes a bed, Hara becomes a necklace, the Naga god who gives the boon that girls worship and pray for is Nagu.

Since then girls perform this puja and wash their brother’s back and get boons of their choice. Breakfast or lunch should be given to the brothers first. Then apply turmeric and saffron first on the back. After that the chickpea forest should be put back. Brothers and sisters should give each other new clothes and Tambula with Dakshina. Then the younger ones should bow down to the older ones and seek blessings. It is said that due to the puja performed by the sister, any difficulties, losses, obstacles and worries encountered in the life of the brother will be solved.
